A Calm Woman is Powerful. A Peaceful Woman is Mastery.
I used to think an accomplished woman was the one who sacrificed the most.
The woman waking up at 3:00 AM to finish a presentation, make lunches, shower, get the kids off to school, fly to Boston, and somehow make it home in time for The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
This was me for many years.
I mistook exhaustion for ambition.
And if I’m honest?
I wore burnout like a badge of honor.
I remember sitting on the sidelines comparing schedules like it was a popularity contest.
Busy = relevance.
Somewhere along the way, women were taught that packed schedules meant importance.
That if we slowed down, softened, rested, or stopped proving—we somehow became less valuable.
At 50, I’m embracing a new-to-me concept:
Soft power.
And here’s what I’m learning:
A calm woman is powerful.
A peaceful woman is mastery.
Because calm and peace are not the same thing.
Calm is a state.
Peace is a way of being.
Calm is what happens when you pause long enough to breathe.
Peace is what happens when you stop building a life that constantly requires recovery.
A calm woman can regulate herself.
She can breathe through hard things.
She can pause before reacting.
She can step away from agitation long enough to hear herself think.
But peace?
Peace asks more of you.
A peaceful woman no longer braces for impact.
She stops living as if chaos is inevitable.
She untangles herself from relationships, expectations, patterns, guilt, people pleasing, perfectionism, and old stories that taught her exhaustion was proof of worth.
She chooses presence over performance.
Truth over proving.
Enough over more.
And perhaps most importantly—
She learns that safety can exist inside herself.
That peace doesn’t come from controlling everything around you.
It comes from no longer abandoning yourself.
I wish the younger me believed this.
It would have saved me years of debilitating anxiety and the exhausting belief that my value lived inside how much I could carry.
Because life has a way of catapulting women into an existence with no brakes.
And then one day…
The bedrooms are empty.
The schedule quiets.
The noise softens.
And you realize you no longer recognize yourself.
These days, I’m testing out what peace feels like.
As a student, not a teacher.
Letting others carry burdens that no longer belong to me.
Resting without feeling like I have to clean the closet first.
Learning that I feel safer in myself than I have in a very long time.
And let me tell you— peace feels weird at first.
It feels lazy.
Unproductive.
Even selfish.
Especially for women who have spent decades proving.
But slowly…
You notice your nervous system resetting.
You stop apologizing for resting.
You stop gripping so tightly.
You stop waiting for the next disaster.
And one day, without realizing it—
You notice you’re no longer just practicing calm.
You’re building peace.
And that?
That’s mastery.
Exhale Moment: You are enough.
